Hereditary spastic paraplegia HSP includes a large, clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of inherited neurodegenerative disorders characterised by lower limb weakness and spasticity. HSP is a rare disorder, with a reported worldwide prevalence that varies from 1. HSP represents a public health issue because it is a rare disease and symptoms can be mild with a slow disease progression, leaving many patients undiagnosed. Nonetheless, these patients do need regular follow-up and genetic counselling, and in view of new treatment possibilities it is important to identify them. Our aim is to build the first UK register for HSP and record clinical and genetic information following a standardised protocol. Patient will fill in a questionnaire regarding their HSP gene defect, symptoms, disease history and medications to combine with genetic results. Where necessary, we will examine patients and where missing, we will perform genetic analysis. We will store clinical and genetic information for each patient on a central database.

Reuters — A British woman paralyzed from the chest down by a horse riding accident has become the first person to take home a robotic exoskeleton that enables her to walk. Although bionic exoskeletons have been used in hospitals and rehabilitation centers, Claire Lomas is the first to take the ReWalk suit home for everyday use. Larry Jasinski, chief executive of Argo Medical Technologies, the company that developed the suit, told Reuters he was initially nervous about backing the marathon bid because the suit was still being tested but Lomas said it held up well.
The exoskeleton is activated by the wearer tilting their balance to indicate the desire to take a step. It costs 45, pounds and although clinical studies are ongoing that could back a case for health authorities to fund purchases of the device, the developers argue that savings on the treatment of ailments related to inactivity could offset the cost. Paralyzed people are prone to pressure sores and a loss of bone density, as well as problems linked to poor posture.
The company estimates that of the 6 million wheelchair users in the U. A report in by U. In the meantime, says Jasinski, the U. Research into exoskeletons goes back 50 years but advances in software management systems and sensors have only recently made them practical. Although Jasinski says this is still years away, scientists have recently unveiled devices that can be controlled in real time by thought using advanced brain scanning.

She pointed out that very fact, then shrugged off his halfhearted offer to ‘consider’ going out with her again. After that, Kristen decided to start working her wheelchair into the conversation earlier, telling potential dates about it at different times — first a few days in, then after a week. No matter when she shared the information, though, the men she was talking to would immediately cut off contact, regardless of how well their conversation had been going before. And occasionally, they would ask direct, offensive questions first.
Not defined by one thing: Kristen didn’t want to be obvious about her wheelchair right away, because she didn’t want it to be the sole thing men judged her on. She found that she came up against the same reactions across the board, whether she was living in LA, Boston, or New York. Looking back, Kristen said that she doesn’t actually have anything against the app. She is back to offline dating, though, and has started seeing a guy she was ‘immediately drawn to’.
The real problem, she explained, is the stigma attached to wheelchairs, and the misconception that anyone in them would be dependent on a partner. And I don’t think it’s their fault, but I did see that there were more people than I realized who felt that way.
